Mothers In Charge
Mothers In Charge is “a violence prevention, education, and intervention-based organization, which advocates and supports youth, young adults, families and community organizations affected by violence. Mothers In Charge advocates for families affected by violence and provides counseling and grief support services for families when a loved one has been murdered. It is comprised of impassioned mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and others who are committed to working towards saving lives and preventing another mother from having to experience this terrible tragedy. Each mother, grandmother, aunt or sister brings a special gift to this organization and its mission.
Their passion and drive come from within because each one of these brave women has somehow found the strength to turn a personal tragedy into a medium for change. They realize that positive change cannot happen within communities without addressing the issue of senseless and random violence. They know that in the names of their lost sons, daughters, and loved ones they can and must serve as the catalyst for change.” MIC conducts public education, outreach, and advocacy facilitating discussion on violence prevention. They also provide grief support for children, youth, and adults who have lost loved ones. MIC provides Cognitive Skills/Problem Solving training in a program called “Thinking for a Change” that is offered in various Philadelphia prisons. MIC partners with Caring Together of Drexel University School of Medicine to run a substance abuse treatment program. MIC also offers mentoring for at-risk adolescent girls.
