Providing Basic Needs

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is involved in a wide variety of programs and efforts to address the root causes of violence. One example is its provision of food, clothing, and other kinds of assistance to those in need. See the description of the Bridgeton Bishop’s Storehouse (a recognized Zone of Peace) elsewhere on this webpage. Another is the Church’s emphasis on strengthening the family. A key program in this effort is the Family Home Evening Program.

This is a program intended to strengthen and bring harmony in families.  We believe that strong families will build strong communities and reduce violence.  Ideally, families get together once a week for an hour or so to enjoy an activity, share a spiritual message, and/or plan for upcoming events. The Family Home Evening is usually set apart from other family activities by beginning and ending with a prayer.  Generally, a family treat is also included.
